Latin America selected for Locarno focus

Open Doors co-production lab has 12 projects

ROME -- The Open Doors co-production lab at the upcoming Locarno Film Festival has whittled its list of more than 300 Latin America submissions to a dozen projects that will vie for two main film production grants.

Open Doors -- which will take place around mid-way through the Locarno event, August 10-12 -- focuses on a different region of the world each year, with Latin America selected for the 2008 edition after a highly successful spotlight on Middle Eastern film last year.

Three projects from Chile were among the selections, making it the only country with more than one selection. Other countries represented in the sidebar are Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

"The selection represents the diversity of Latin American cinema with its variety of themes and stylistic approaches," said Vincenzo Bugno, the Open Doors project manager.

The 61 st edition of the Locarno festival takes place Aug. 6-16.
