Lawrence Hill's 'Book' headed for big screen

Canada's Conquering Lion Pictures to adapt best-seller

TORONTO -- Canadian producer Conquering Lion Pictures has optioned the film rights to Lawrence Hill's best-selling novel "The Book of Negroes."

Toronto-based filmmaker Clement Virgo ("Poor Boy's Game") and producing partner Damon D'Oliveira are to adapt the award-winning novel for the big screen as an international co-production, with Virgo directing.

"The Book of Negroes" portrays a young girl taken from Africa and forced into slavery on a South Carolina plantation before she escapes to freedom in Nova Scotia.

The deal was brokered by D'Oliveira for Conquering Lion Pictures and Ellen Levine of Trident Media Group for Hill.
