Lee Daniels to Chair Capri, Hollywood Fest
The Oscar-nominated director is already hard at work on the upcoming edition.
Filmmaker Lee Daniels will serve as the chair of the 2018 Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival, organizers revealed Tuesday.
Daniels was nominated for the best director and best picture Oscars for his 2009 film Precious. He followed that up with The Paperboy in 2012 and The Butler in 2013. He has recently been successful in television, creating the hit series Empire and Star.
Daniels has announced his next project will be a biopic of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday. Andra Day and Lakeith Stanfield are in talks to star. The script Billie was penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Suzan Lori-Parks.
Capri, Hollywood is the last major film festival of the year, taking place over the New Year's period. It draws a variety of Oscar contenders for panels and discussions ahead of the Academy Awards.
Daniels previously was awarded the Capri Social Award at the festival in 2011 for his philanthropy work, which includes sitting on the board of the Ghetto Film School and a variety of LGBTQ activism.
“Through his multi-faceted creative and social endeavors, Lee personifies the spirit of our festival, which aims to be a place of exchange between film cultures, of opportunity for young authors as well as an important showcase of high-quality movies at the height of the Awards season,” said festival founder and director Pascal Vicedomini. “We are truly pleased that he has accepted our invitation to be this year’s chair.”
“I’m looking forward to spending the year-end holidays in Italy and working with Pascal in making the 2018 Capri, Hollywood festival the best-ever. The festival has traditionally attracted some of the year’s most prestigious films, along with their creative and onscreen talent,” said Daniels. “And more than their fair share have gone on to win year-end accolades, such as Academy Awards, BAFTAs and Golden Globes. It is our intention to continue this tradition.”
The 23rd edition of the Capri, Hollywood festival is set to run Dec. 26-Jan. 2.
