Leonor Varela to Star in Biopic About Tina Modotti (Exclusive)
Argentine director Lucia Puenzo is directing "La Mujer Infinita."
MEXICO CITY – Award-winning Argentine helmer Lucia Puenzo is set to co-write and direct La Mujer Infinita, a biopic starring Leonor Varela as Italian photographer and actress Tina Modotti.
Based on the book of the same name by Jose Ignacio Valenzuela, who is co-writing the Spanish-language script, the picture is being produced by Santa Monica-based BN Films. Mexican film financier Alex Garcia and Argentine producer Lucas Akoskin launched BN Films last year.
Puenzo, winner of the Critics' Week prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 for her drama XXY, will begin shooting at the end of the year. She is in post-production on her third feature film, Wakolda, a true story about an Argentine family that unknowingly lived with a Nazi war criminal. Disney distribution arm Buena Vista has Latin American rights to Wakolda and will bow the picture in Argentina, France and Spain in May.
Varela played Marta del Sol in the TV series Dallas, and she's known for her role in Guillermo del Toro's Blade II.
BN also is producing The Jesuit, a revenge drama written by Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader and with appearances from actors Tim Roth, Brian Cox, Tommy Flanagan and Neal McDonough. The film stars Mexican actor Jose Maria Yazpik (The Burning Plain) as an ex-convict who is forced to take matters into his own hands after his wife is killed and his son is kidnapped.
