Leslye Headland to Premiere New Comedy 'Layover'
The latest play from the writer-director of 'Bachelorette' and 'Sleeping With Other People' will be produced off-Broadway next summer by Second Stage Theatre.
Leslye Headland will reunite with the off-Broadway company and director that first put her on the map with Bachelorette when Second Stage Theatre presents the world premiere next summer of her new play, Layover.
The dark comedy asks, Can we ever know somebody while hiding so much of ourselves?, posing that question via strangers seated next to one another on a Thanksgiving flight delayed due to heavy snow.
Trip Cullman, whose 2010 production of Bachelorette became a breakout hit in Second Stage's Uptown series devoted to new writers, will direct Layover, marking his third theatrical collaboration with Headland. He also directed the 2012 off-Broadway premiere of Assistance, the playwright's riff on ruthless ambition, inspired by her time in the Weinstein Co. trenches.
Commissioned by Second Stage, Layover will be the final production of the company's 2015-16 mainstage season, beginning previews on Aug. 2 with an official opening to be set for later that month. The cast and complete creative team are to be announced.
Headland wrote and directed the 2012 feature adaptation of Bachelorette, which starred Kirsten Dunst, Rebel Wilson, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan. She followed up with Sleeping With Other People, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie.
She also penned the screenplay for the 2014 Kevin Hart comedy About Last Night and served as a staff writer on the FX series Terriers.
