Liang takes Channel 5 post in Singapore

SINGAPORE -- Veteran production executive Kenneth Liang has been tapped to head programming and production for MediaCorp's English-language Channel 5 here, the broadcaster said Tuesday.

Liang's appointment as executive vp TV programming and production for Channel 5 is effective June 1, and is part of MediaCorp's restructure of its production, programming and promotions divisions.

MediaCorp. also said that deputy chief executive (television) Chang Long Jong will head TV programming and production for the network's two Chinese channels -- 8 and U.

Speaking after the announcement, Liang said that Channel 5 "has to enter into a new pact with the independent production industry."

"We have to become relevant to the everyday lives of Singaporeans. This is not peculiar to Channel 5. Broadcasters all over the world have to come to terms with the new media environment," Liang said. "It's no longer a matter of making good television programs, it's a matter of surviving and thriving alongside all the new media."

Liang also said that the "whole business model for television has changed. It's now a matter of monetizing opportunities inside and outside the box."

The MediaCorp. statement said its new structure for the Chinese- and English-language channels "will provide for better integration and execution between programming, production and promotions."

Liang's appointment marks his return to MediaCorp. after a seven-year absence in which he held senior appointments in the Singapore Tourism Board and Economic Development Board. He also was chief executive for Dream Forest Prods., which includes film production house Dream Forest Studio.
