Lightning makes 'Contract' deal

Santa Monica-based sales and distribution entity Lightning Entertainment has picked up the international sales rights to Jada Pinkett-Smith's directorial debut, "The Human Contract."

Written by Pinkett-Smith, the movie follows a successful corporate man harboring a secret. He befriends a free-spirited stranger who encourages him to ditch his stuffy lifestyle and live life freely.

Starring in the film are Jason Clarke and Paz Vega as well as Pinkett-Smith, Ted Danson, Joanna Cassidy and Idris Elba.

The movie recently wrapped production and is now in post, with footage to be screened next month at Berlin's European Film Market.

ICM, which reps Pinkett-Smith and Elba, introduced the project to Lightning, arranged the financing and is handling North American distribution rights.

For Lightning, the film represents the first investment using the company's $20 million acquisitions and production fund announced in November.
