Linkin Park, NIN headed for Japan festival

Summer Sonic is held in Tokyo and Osaka

TOKYO -- Creative Man Prods. has announced the initial lineup for the 2009 edition of the Summer Sonic festival. Headliners include Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance and Nine Inch Nails, all veterans of the bash.

This year is the 10th anniversary for the premiere summer music festival in the Tokyo and Osaka areas and it will be held Aug. 7-9, stretching over three days for the first time.

Summer Sonic is held simultaneously in Tokyo and Osaka. The Tokyo leg is staged at the Chiba Lotte Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe, a convention center directly beside the stadium; in Osaka, the festival is staged at the Maishima Osaka site.

Previously, the billing for each day alternated between the two cities and how the lineups will now be rotated on a three-day cycle is yet to be determined.

Other acts announced include the Flaming Lips, the Specials and Sonic Youth. Summer Sonic will continue its trend of bringing artists that have recently been gaining steam in the U.S. and U.K. This year Lady Gaga and Hollywood Undead, among others, will make their first foray to Japan.

Other performers include Aphex Twin, CSS, the Enemy, Klaxons, Mogwai, Paramore, Placebo, Sonic Youth, Soulwax, Teenage Fanclub and Boys Like Girls. Additional acts are set to be announced at a later date.

Creative Man is the creator and sole promoter of the Summer Sonic festival. More than 50,000 fans attend in both Osaka and Tokyo.
