Locarno fest plans tribute to Bergman

ROME -- Ingmar Bergman, the iconic Swedish director who died Monday at age 89, will be the subject of a special Aug. 1 homage at the Locarno Film Festival.

Festival organizers will unspool Bergman's last full-length film, "Saraband," a 2003 drama about the relationship between a woman and her ex-husband's family after they hadn't seen each other in 30 years. The film will screen in Locarno's famous Piazza Grande after the festival's opening-night film, "Vexille."

It will be the first time one of Bergman's films has screened in the Piazza Grande at the 60-year-old film festival, which begins Wednesday and runs through Aug. 11.
