Locarno sets spotlight on Latin America

ROME -- The Locarno Film Festival's Open Doors co-production laboratory this year will focus on Latin America, the 61-year-old festival announced Thursday.

The previous two editions of Open Doors -- which provides production grants to winning films -- focused on projects from Southeast Asia the Middle East, respectively.

Organizers said the 2008 edition would focus on projects from countries with emerging film production industries, such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and Uruguay. But film projects from any Latin American state will be eligible.

"Latin America is a region with a wealth of diversity and a region which offers a great deal to discover," Open Doors director Vincenzo Bugno said in a statement. "We want to focus the spotlight on those countries."

The titles of the film projects to participate in the Open Doors laboratory will be announced in June. The Locarno festival will take place Aug. 6-16.
