Locarno's Rex closing doors

SALERNO, Italy -- The historic Cinema Rex in the Swiss City of Locarno will close for good Thursday, the day after a 4.5 million francs ($3.7 million) restructuring plan was rejected, leaving the host city for one of Europe's oldest film festivals without a working cinema.

The restructuring plan had been backed by the Locarno Film Festival and the town's mayor along with other advocates, but was denied for financial reasons by Piazza Grande SA, the cinema's owner.

The festival will still screen films in the city's picturesque Piazza Grande and other temporary facilities. The 60th edition of the festival will take place August 1-11.
