Macbeth Still - H 2015

Justin Kurzel's take on Shakespeare's classic, co-starring Marion Cotillard, is set to hit U.S. theaters in December.

The official U.S. trailer for Justin Kurzel's well-reviewed, Michael Fassbender-starring Macbeth has debuted online.

In the preview, Fassbender's Macbeth is shown seizing control, with his manipulative wife, played by Marion Cotillard, plotting his rise. The rest of the trailer features battle scenes intercut with Macbeth and Lady Macbeth dealing with the consequences of their actions. Both the battle-filled beginning and end, which seems to feature scenes from the red-filtered climactic showdown with Macduff, feature chants of "Hail, Macbeth."

The trailer also plays up the critical acclaim the movie has received following its Cannes premiere, with flattering quotes popping up on the screen throughout. Reviewing the film out of Cannes, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "With its foregrounded class conflict, horror-movie spookiness and — most importantly — use of brutal violence, it's an adaptation that has a much better chance than most Bard-based works of crossing over to audiences beyond the arthouses. The play's evergreen popularity in high school syllabi should help that along, as will the growing box-office draw of Michael Fassbender, sexy, charismatic and later poignant in the title role, opposite a surprisingly cast but completely persuasive Marion Cotillard as his manipulative wife."

The Weinstein Co.'s Radius subsidiary is releasing the film in select theaters on Dec. 4, with Amazon streaming the film for Prime Instant Video subscribers just a couple of months later.
