Mackenzie brothers on Global, eh?

TORONTO –- Canadian network Global Television has acquired a cartoon based on the Second City TV characters Bob & Doug Mackenzie, played by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis, for its 2009 season.

Thomas and Toronto-based Pat Burns are to produce the animated version of beer-addled brothers, voiced by Thomas and Moranis, that will debut in Canada.

The Bob & Doug characters launched as a two-minute SCTV skit in 1980 on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., in part to mock federal government rules that require the public broadcaster to air identifiably "Canadian content" in its homegrown TV shows.

The "hoser" characters, played by Thomas and Moranis, grew a cult following as they went on to star in TV commercials and the 1983 dumb buddy feature film "The Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew."
