Macy's Dumps Donald Trump Over Immigration Comments
"Macy’s is a company that stands for diversity and inclusion," a statement from the company reads.
Macy's is ending its business relationship with Donald Trump.
A spokesperson for the retail giant tells The Hollywood Reporter: "In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy’s values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection, which has been sold at Macy’s since 2004.
"Macy’s is a company that stands for diversity and inclusion," the statement continues. "We have no tolerance for discrimination in any form. We welcome all customers, and respect for the dignity of all people is a cornerstone of our culture. We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation."
As of Wednesday morning, Macy's website still displayed items from the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, a clothing line that features men's shirts, ties and watches.
Macy's decision comes after a MoveOn.org petition, demanding the retailer sever ties with Trump, collected more than 700,000 signatures.
Trump responded immediately to Macy's statement with his own, posted to Instagram at 8:22 a.m. PT: "I have decided to terminate my relationship with Macy's because of the pressure being put on them by outside sources. While selling Trump ties and shirts at Macy's is a small business in terms of dollar volume, my principles are far more important and therefore much more valuable. I have never been happy about the fact that my shirts are made in China, and should I start a new product line somewhere in the future, I would insist that they are made in America.
"I am not beholden to anyone and this includes NBC and Macy's. Clearly, NBC and Macy's support illegal immigration, which is totally detrimental to the fabric of our once great country."
Shortly after Trump and Macy's separately announced they would be cutting their business ties, Trump took to Twitter to call for a boycott of Macy's, claiming that the retail giant is "weak on border security & stopping illegal immigration" and perpetrators of racial profiling (for which he noted Macy's had recently paid a fine of $650,000).
Those who believe in tight border security, stopping illegal immigration & SMART trade deals w/other countries should boycott @Macys.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 1, 2015
Interesting that @Macys criticized me but just paid $650,000 in fines for racial profiling. Are they racists?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 1, 2015
Who is @Macys to pretend innocence when they “racial profile” all over the place? Paid big fine!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 1, 2015
