Celebrity Manicurist Madeline Poole Talks the Latest Nail Shape at Adam Selman Show
So far Rihanna’s a fan of the squareletto.
Rihanna may have missed her go-to designer pal Adam Selman’s show at New York Fashion Week, but her name came up backstage when talking nails with celebrity manicurist Madeline Poole, who created the evening’s look. Models wore “tomboy” dots of navy Sally Hansen polish atop naked nails for a low-key negative space effect to contradict the feminine, floral clothes.
On runways, “fashion nails are geared more toward natural, shorter nails,” said Poole, whereas “I think on celebrities you see a lot more pointy and squareletto — a little more extreme.” Pointy nails are nothing new, but squareletto? The nail artist, who has worked with Alexa Chung, Sky Ferreira and Haim, explained to Pret-a-Reporter that it’s “a long, square nail that’s tapered. It becomes skinnier at the end; people call it a coffin nail too.”
And indeed, it was Rihanna who popularized it, she said. “I really do like watching Rihanna,” said Poole. “She has really pretty hands and long, elegant fingers so she can pull off a nail like that. She doesn’t really do nail art, but she’ll do fun colors like metallic magenta.”
As for Poole’s prediction of the new nude for this fall season? “At the Emmys you’ll see a lot of nudes and grey and taupe and khaki, but I’m seeing a ton of white nails. For fall I like them. All of a sudden they’re major, they just clicked for me. I like it best on a longer nail, with a little length.” Ladies, take note.
