Madman moving at Warp speed

SYDNEY -- Australian independent distributor Madman Entertainment is moving into production, teaming with U.K. production shingle Warp Films to develop and co-produce as many as six films in the next three years.

Anna McLeish, who recently resigned her position as Madman's head of theatrical distribution, will head up the co-production venture in Australia, working with Warp managing directors Mark Herbert and Robin Gutch.

McLeish said it is too early to talk about specific projects but noted the two companies share "similar sensibilities and tastes." The 40% producer offset recently introduced here also provides "an incentive in getting this partnership off the ground," she added.

Madman was the Australian distributor for Shane Meadows' "This Is England," produced by Warp last year, and will release "Donkey Punch," "A Complete History of My Sexual Failures" and "Hush" in Australia and New Zealand.

Warp's Herbert said that the partnership could "develop some market-focused yet left-field films, by bringing together the Warp brand with Madman's fantastic knowledge of the Australian filmmaking landscape."
