This Is the Deal With Madonna's Drake Coachella Performance Tank Top
Madonna and Drake's Coachella make-out sesh was the stuff of sexual nightmares. But at least she wore a cool tank top. Designer Patrick Monahan shares its story.
Rumors flew throughout the Coachella Valley this weekend that Madonna was somewhere nearby. Music insiders claimed that she was going to guest appear on a Coachella stage at some point. And on Saturday she was scheduled to show up at Jeremy Scott's epic Coachella party, but didn't. So we had all but forgotten about the Queen of Pop until Sunday night, when she indeed appeared during Drake's festival-closing set and shared a kiss with the rapper that was so incredibly awkward, we wouldn't wish it on two cousins in a bar who were going for it to earn a free shot.
Put aside the truly terrifying lip lock — during which Madonna seemed to entrap the rapper, causing him to make a lemon face before wiping the 56-year-old's spittle from his face — there was indeed a bright spot from her appearance: the "Bigger Than Madonna" T-shirt that she wore onstage.
Turns out the piece is made by L.A.-based Private Party, the brand known for comical graphic T-shirts, sweatshirts and bathing suits with sayings and song lyrics including, "I Woke Up Like This," "Netflix, Nachos & Naps," and "Who The Fvck is Aubrey Graham?" Ashley Tisdale, Emily Ratajkowski and Tracee Ellis Ross are among the many notable fans of the company's wink-and-nod gear.
So just how did Madonna's onstage piece come to be?
"My dear friend works closely with her team so she put us in touch," Private Party founder and designer Patrick Monahan told Pret-a-Reporter via text after the fest. "After Drake released the 'Big as Madonna' track on his new album, we immediately knew it was something we wanted to make for her. We passed along the idea and her team loved it."
As for that kiss, from which we personally think Drake was lucky to emerge alive, we had to ask Monahan his thoughts. Apparently the designer, who is married to Forbes 30-Under-30 jewelry designer Amanda Thomas, was not as grossed out by it as we were.
"I say YAY!!," Monahan texted. "Anything Drake and Madonna do is magic."
