Madonna's 'Hard Candy' tops Billboard 200

It's her seventh chart-topper; Mariah Carey falls to No. 2

Three words from the Material Girl to the Funny Girl: Watch your back.

Madonna rules the Billboard 200 this week as "Hard Candy" bows in the top spot. It's her seventh No. 1 disc, putting her just one behind Barbra Streisand for most by a female artist.

Madonna had been tied for second place with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Carey, however, can take solace in the fact that "Hard Candy" moved 180,000 fewer copies in its first week than her "E=MC2" did last month.

"Hard Candy" is among seven top 10 debuts this week -- the most since the same number bowed in April 2007. Ohio-born R&B singer-songwriter Lyfe Jennings lands his second top 10 with "Lyfe Change." Pop metal veteran Def Leppard is right behind with "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge," its best chart showing since the multiplatinum "Adrenalize" spent five weeks at No. 1 in 1992.

Philadelphia hip-hop group the Roots lands its fourth top 10 with "Rising Down," and British trip-hop act Portishead gets its first with "Third," the reunited band's first studio album since 1997.

Tom Petty's pre-Heartbreakers band Mudcrutch bows next with its self-titled first album -- 33 years after its breakup. Country megastar Tim McGraw's Wal-Mart exclusive hits package rounds out the top tier.

Overall album sales were 7.55 million units, up 10% from the previous week but down 10.4% from same frame in 2007.

The top 10:
1. Madonna, "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros., 280,000 units)
