Director Radu Jude's scathing social satire about sex, lies and videotape is set for a release later this year.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the North American rights to Berlin Golden Bear winner Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn by Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude.

The satire follows a high school teacher struggling with the fallout of her sex tape leaking online. Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn is a wildly entertaining and imaginative film with a lot on its mind. Radu Jude has staked his claim as a high priest of cinema," Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said in a statement. The movie was shot entirely during COVID lockdown last summer, with cast and crew all wearing antiviral masks.

Jude added in his own statement with an echo of Shakespeare: “I sincerely hope this film will be ‘a consummation devoutly to be wished.'"

The Romanian film is produced by microFILM Romania and co-produced by Paul Thiltges Distributions (Luxembourg), endorfilm (Czech Republic) and Kinorama (Croatia) in association with Bord Cadre Films (Switzerland), Sovereign Films (UK).

Ada Solomon produced the film. Co-producers are Paul Thiltges, Adrien Chef, Jiří Konečný, Ankica Jurić Tilić.

The North American distribution deal was negotiated by Magnolia executive vp Dori Begley and senior vp of acquisitions John Von Thaden, and by Ioanna Stais of Heretic Outreach on behalf of the filmmakers.
