Toronto: Magnolia Pictures Takes Lesbian Drama 'Two of Us' for North America
The feature directorial debut of Filippo Meneghetti had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to the lesbian drama Two of Us (Deux), the feature directorial debut of Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti, after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The drama follows two women pensioners (Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier), who live across the hall from each other in the same apartment building but have kept their lesbian romance hidden for decades.
"Filippo Meneghetti has delivered an incredibly beautiful, profound directorial debut and Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier are unforgettable in the lead roles," Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said Monday in a statement.
Two of Us was written by Meneghetti, Malysone Bovorasmy and Florence Vignon and is a Paprika Films, Tarantula Luxembourg and Artémis Production effort. Producer credits are shared by Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin and Laurent Baujard.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia executive vp Dori Begley and Magnolia senior vp acquisitions John Von Thaden, with Daniela Elstner of Doc & Film International negotiating for the filmmaker and producers.
Magnolia plans a theatrical release in early 2020.
