Magnolia's Magnet Releasing Picks Up 'God Bless America'

The movie premiered Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness sidebar.

Magnolia Pictures’ genre arm Magnet Releasing has picked up the world releasing rights to God Bless America, the Bobcat Goldthwait-directed comedy.

The movie premiered Friday night at TIFF’s Midnight Madness sidebar and is Magnet’s second pick-up of the festival after yesterday’s acquisition of Goon, the hockey comedy starring Seann William Scott and Jay Baruchel.

God Bless America has been described as Natural Born Killer meets Idiocracy and follows a man with nothing left to lose who teams up with a 16-year old and goes on a killing spree to off who he considers the stupidest members of society.

Starring Joel Murray and Tara Lynn Barr, the pic is a Darko Entertainment production written and directed by Goldthwait) and produced by Sean McKittrick and Jeff Culotta. The movie will be the second team-up between Goldthwait, Darko and Magnolia/Magnet; the trio released Goldthwait’s World’s Greatest Dad in 2009.

Magnet is planning a 2012 theatrical release through Magnolia’s Ultra VOD program.

Preferred Content handled the sale of the film. Magnolia International is handling international sales of the film.
