Smith & Cult beauty ambassador Sarah Maxwell gives her tips for putting a spin on a classic black liner, red lip look.

In two years, Smith & Cult, the glamorously packaged and provocatively named beauty line (think: Flesh Riot, Her Name Is Bubbles and The Warning, for bold, attention-grabbing lip lacquers), has become a go-to for celebrity makeup artists and celebs alike. (Mindy Kaling and Mandy Moore are big fans.) Which is no surprise given that it was co-founded by the original Hard Candy creator, Dineh Mohajer, who launched acid green, sky blue and granite gray nail polish during the Clueless and Contempo Casual-loving '90s, and built that brand into an L.A. business success story by packaging the polish with plastic rings.

With Smith & Cult, Mohajer has done it again, creating a shiny, bright and statement-making color range and sexy imagery, this time seen on the web and social media feeds.

We spoke to the brand's beauty ambassador, Sarah Maxwell, to inquire about Smith & Cult's best holiday makeup tricks and tips.

"My go-to holiday look includes a matte red lip paired with a classic winged liner and a generous coating of mascara," says the makeup artist, who recommends layering lip stains under a high shine lacquer in order to add depth and a two-tone effect to a standard red lip.

Of course, focusing on the lip is also the easiest way to transition a look from day to night, particularly when most people will be heading straight to office and other holiday parties directly from work.

More drama on the eyes also amps up a typical beauty look to one that feels more festive for the holidays. For that, Maxwell recommends deeper, richer shades to line the eyes rather than an all-over lid color, though a sweep of shimmer powder on the entire lid will add more brightness to the eyes.

To take the shimmer factor one step further, Maxwell says that a touch of sheen on the high points of the cheekbone, Cupid's bow and along the brow bone (applied by tapping in lightly with your ring finger) allows you to sparkle without looking shiny or sweaty. "Smith & Cult Book of Eyes Eye Quad in Soft Shock ($44) is perfect for subtle yet glittery glamour," says the makeup artist.

And as for those nails, colors from Smith & Cult's Holiday collection include names like Shattered Souls, Dark Like Me, Kundalini Hustle and Vegas Post Apocalyptic ($18 each), enticing beauty lovers in a similar envelope-pushing manner as its Hard Candy predecessor (plastic rings not included).
