The company has been ramping up its feature production slate

Management and production company Circle of Confusion has hired Matt Smith to oversee the company’s motion picture production department.

The company, perhaps best known for being behind AMC’s The Walking Dead, has been ramping up its feature production slate to match its very active television slate, and Smith has been brought in to oversee the expansion.

The company already has several features in the works. It's in production on Mr. Right with Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick, with three more movies in post: action pic American Ultra, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart; sci-fi thriller Air, starring Norman Reedus and Djimon Hounsou; and Spare Parts, starring George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis and Marisa Tomei, which Lionsgate will release in January.

Most recently, Smith was an executive producer on Disney’s Maleficent, the Angelina Jolie fantasy that has grossed over $750 million dollars worldwide.

Prior to that, Smith served as executive vp production and development at Offspring Entertainment, where he executive produced Step Up All In and Step Up: Revolution.

"Matt's instincts for finding and developing compelling commercial material are exceptional," said Circle partners David Alpert, David Engel, Frank Frattaroli and Lawrence Mattis in a joint statement.  "His energy is boundless and infectious. With Circle's production activity increasing at a rapid pace, Matt is exactly the right executive to bring aboard to manage and further expand our slate."

Smith remains attached to several projects around town, including MGM’s Valley Girl: The Musical and Universal’s Villains, based on the Viper graphic novel. He is also attached as executive producer on Tink, Disney’s fresh take on the character of Tinkerbell, and Paramount’s Heatseekers.
