Malta Film Festival set for Sept.

ROME -- Malta's ministries of tourism and of culture on Tuesday officially announced the creation of the Malta Film Festival, to be held in September on the small Mediterranean island.

Most of the funding for the Sept. 15-23 festival will come from the Paris-based Association for Cultural Exchanges between Europe and the Middle East, organizers said.

The festival plans to hold competitions in six yet-to-be named sections. As of Tuesday, some 60 films have been submitted for consideration, organizers said.

One of the aims of the festival will be to increase exchanges and understanding between Europe and Arab countries. Malta, which is between the Italian island of Sicily and the African nation of Tunisia, has been the scene of exchanges between Europe and the Arab world for centuries.
