'Mamma Mia!' still matriarch of o'seas b.o.


Mamma Mia! That's some overseas business.

Universal's ABBA musical adaptation "Mamma Mia!" earned the No. 1 spot on the overseas circuit for the second frame running with an estimated $17.5 million take from 4,296 screens in 44 territories during the weekend.

"Mamma Mia!" opened tops in France with $2.4 million from 462 screens; Belgium, with $1 million from 55 dates; and Mexico, with $850,000 from 294 dates.

The movie's international cume is $307 million. "Mamma Mia!" has another 15 markets to launch, including Italy on Oct. 3 and Japan on Jan. 30.

Placing No. 2 overall was Sony's "Hancock," which drew $10 million on 1,540 screens in 34 markets to bring its international total to $375.2 million.

Finishing third was Universal's "Wanted" with an estimated $8.2 million from 1,802 theaters in 34 markets for a cume of $158.5 million.

Coming in fourth was Universal's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which grossed an estimated $7.5 million from 4,416 dates in 55 markets.

In fifth was Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight," which pulled in an action-packed $6.7 million from about 4,250 screens in 58 markets to get its international tally to $448.9 million. (partialdiff)
