'Manchester by the Sea' Trailer: Casey Affleck Reluctantly Returns Home
The Kenneth Lonergan film hits select theaters Nov. 18.
Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester by the Sea has debuted its first trailer, starring Casey Affleck as a reluctant guardian and Lucas Hedges as his equally reluctant charge.
Manchester by the Sea made its world premiere in January at Sundance, drawing some of the strongest reviews at the festival. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Todd McCarthy called the film "a wrenching family tragedy [that] is dramatized with the depth of a high-quality American stage piece."
Manchester by the Sea also stars Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler. The film is seen as an awards-season contender, particularly for Affleck.
In the drama, the sudden death of Joe (Chandler) has his younger brother Lee (Affleck) made legal guardian of Joe's son (Hedges), pushing Lee to return to his hometown and face his separated wife Randi and the community of North Shore, Mass.
Amazon has partnered with Roadside Attraction to distribute Manchester by the Sea for an awards-season theatrical run, hitting select theaters on Nov. 18, and will add more theaters until it goes nationwide sometime in mid-December.
Lonergan, writer and director of 2000’s Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner You Can Count on Me, also wrote Manchester by the Sea. Matt Damon produced the film along with Kimberly Steward, Lauren Beck, Kevin Walsh and Chris Moore. Josh Godfrey, Declan Baldwin and Bill Migliore executive produced the project that was originally packaged as a starring vehicle for Damon.
