Manhattan Actress Makes Toronto Court Appearance on Baby Kidnapping Charge

New York model-actress remains in custody after allegedly kidnapping baby during faux casting call.

TORONTO -- A New York City model-actress made a brief court appearance in Toronto Tuesday to answer alleged baby snatching charges.

Michelle Marie Gopaul, 24, is to remain in custody on a charge of abducting a person under 14 until a third bail hearing in one week.

Gopaul, who is from Manhattan and has family in Toronto, was also denied bail during an earlier court hearing on Saturday. The American woman was arrested early Friday after a day earlier allegedly kidnapping a one-month old baby, Roma Patel, at a fake advertised casting call for a Bollywood movie.

The baby was returned to Toronto police in the early hours of New Year’s Day after her terrified parents alerted the authorities of the alleged kidnapping and an Amber Alert was publicized.

Gopaul was subsequently arrested in a suburban Toronto neighborhood, according to a statement issued by the Toronto City Police's 22 Division.

Her page on the Model Mayhem website pointed to acting credits in the movie The Interpreter and a 2006 American Expresss TV commercial, before it was taken down.
