Marcus Theatres adds 3-D screens

13 auditoriums to be ready by March 27 bow of 'Monsters'

Milwaukee-based Marcus Theatres on Wednesday announced plans to install RealD digital 3-D projection systems in 13 more of its auditoriums.

The 3-D systems will be in place by the March 27 opening of DreamWorks Animation’s first 3-D release, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” Marcus said. “Monsters vs. Aliens” is expected to play on more than 2,000 3-D screens total.

With the new screens, Marcus will offer 3-D projection at 27 of its theaters in seven Midwestern states.

“This powerful technology has promising revenue potential,” Marcus president Bruce Olsen said. “We are very encouraged by attendance trends, and digital 3-D’s success to date has had a positive impact on our boxoffice.”

RealD chief Michael Lewise said 3-D screens have produced grosses “up to six times better than the 2-D versions of the same film.”

Marcus is the nation’s seventh-biggest circuit, operating 675 screens in 55 theaters throughout the Midwest.
