Mario Barth looks to do good 'Business'

Stand-up's debut looks to top German boxoffice

COLOGNE, Germany -- "Mannersache" (Man's Business), the film debut of German stand-up phenomenon Mario Barth, looks like a lock for this weekend's No. 1 slot in Germany after the film ticked up 140,000 admissions in its first day of release Thursday.

Directed by Gernot Roll, "Mannersache" features Barth as a struggling stand-up who finds the key to success in poking fun at the battle of the sexes. Barth has used similar material to become Germany's No. 1 comedian.

If "Mannersache" holds its momentum, it should knock out current German champ "The Reader," which has earned about €10 million ($14 million) in three weeks of release.

The only new release that could give Barth's comedy a run for its money is Oscar champ "Slumdog Millionaire," which also bowed here Thursday. First-day figures for "Slumdog" were not available Friday.
