Marisa Tomei to Star in 'The Rose Tattoo' on Broadway
Tennessee Williams' Tony Award-winning play is set to make its New York return this fall.
Roundabout Theatre Company on Monday announced a new Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' play The Rose Tattoo, starring Oscar winner Marisa Tomei as Serafina Delle Rose.
The show, directed by Trip Cullman, was previously performed with Tomei in the same role during the 2016 Williamstown Theatre Festival. It is set to land on Broadway this fall, with preview performances beginning at New York's American Airlines Theatre on Sept. 19. An official opening is slated for Oct. 15.
Tomei's character, Serafina — an Italian-American widow who reignites her passion for love and lust after meeting a handsome suitor — was previously portrayed by theater vets Maureen Stapleton and Mercedes Ruehl on Broadway, and onscreen by Anna Magnani, who won an Academy Award for the 1955 film adaptation.
The play was last performed on Broadway in 1995 with Ruehl as Serafina. That same year, it was nominated for a Tony in the best revival category. It previously won best play honors, among other awards, during its initial Broadway run in 1951.
According to a press release, the remaining castmembers and design team for the upcoming production of The Rose Tattoo will be announced soon.
