Robert Redford was at one time in talks to play the evangelical minister.

Martin Sheen will play televangelist Oral Roberts in Netflix's real-life drama Come Sunday.

The feature, based on a 2005 This American Life segment titled "Heretics," will star Chiwetel Ejiofor as a minister in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who loses his congregation of thousands following the revelation that he no longer believes in hell.

Atlanta break-out LaKeith Stanfield will also star in the feature that will be directed by Joshua Marston.

In 2010, the feature was originally set up as a directing vehicle for World War Z helmer Marc Forster, but the directing reins have since been handed over to Marston. Marcus Hinchey wrote the screenplay. This American Life host Ira Glass will produce, along with Alissa Shipp and Endgame Entertainment's James D. Stern.

In 2014, it was reported that Robert Redford was in talks to play the famous evangelical minister. (The Butch Cassidy actor recently announced an impending retirement from acting.)

This isn't the first Netflix project for Sheen; he stars in the streamer's Jane Fonda-Lily Tomlin comedy Grace and Frankie. He was also recently seen opposite Warren Beatty in the old Hollywood feature Rules Don't Apply.

He is repped by ICM.
