Emily Blunt Uses Magic to Help Banks Family in 'Mary Poppins Returns' Trailer

The Rob Marshall film also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke.

The official trailer for Mary Poppins Returns debuted on Monday.

A sequel to the 1964 film Mary Poppins, the 2018 musical fantasy film follows grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw). After the death of Michael's wife, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to help raise the new generation of Banks children. Street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the eccentric Topsy (Meryl Streep) also join Mary to help the family in their time of need.

The Rob Marshall-directed film also stars Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, Nathanael Saleh, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury and David Warner.

The trailer opens with Michael and Jane looking through their forgotten belongings in their childhood home. "I honestly can't remember why we kept most of this stuff to begin with," says Ben as he looks at a snow globe and kite. While Jane is nostalgic about their belongings, Ben has no grievances about throwing the once-sentimental items away.

When Jack and the youngest Banks child, Georgie (Dawson), are flying the kite in the backyard, Mary Poppins descends from the sky. Michael points out that she has hardly aged and the magical nanny replies, "Really? One never discusses a woman's age, Michael. Would have hoped I taught you better."

Michael is later seen breaking down in tears as he reveals that they are about to lose his family's home. A montage of magical moments made possible by the nanny are then shown, including the family swimming underwater fully clothed, floating in the air and the children sitting in a bathtub that floats in a body of water as dolphins jump over them.

"Off we go," Mary says at the conclusion of the trailer as she jumps and disappears into a bathtub.

Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on Dec. 19. Watch the full official trailer above.
