Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up North American rights to Mapplethorpe, which sees The Crown star Matt Smith play the late controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

The movie follows the photographer in his early career as he photographs everyone from New York socialites to members of the city's S&M underground scene.

Marianne Rendon, John Benjamin Hickey and Mark Moses also star in Mapplethorpe, which screened at this year's Tribeca Film Festival and is set to be released in late fall.

Ondi Timoner directed the film, which he co-wrote with Mikko Alanne. Eliza Dushku, Timoner, Nate Dushku and Richard J. Bosner produced, with Peter Palandjian and Sam Maydew executive producing.

UTA negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
