Maya now 'Players' with first feature

Maya Entertainment has greenlighted its first feature, the slacker comedy "Hollywood Players." The film, written and directed by Joaquin Perea, will target the U.S. Latino market.

Robert A. Parada of Streetwise Entertainment and Maya executive Sandra Avila will oversee production. Maya Entertainment founder and chairman Moctesuma Esparza will executive produce.

"Players" revolves around East L.A. brothers who accidentally videotape a suspicious transaction that makes them notorious when the clip turns up online. Casting is under way for a February start.

"Joaquin has written a movie that encompasses today's Latino youth and culture," Parada said. "Maya Entertainment understands that demographic."

Perea, a co-founder of Streetwise, also co-wrote and directed "The Devil Inside" in 2006. (partialdiff)
