MBC tops Korean TV drama list

SEOUL -- Television network MBC has been the strongest station in South Korea for TV dramas this decade, according to a report issued by TNS Media Korea today.

The TNS report listed the top 20 dramas on local television since 2000.

MBC topped the list, with the No. 1 program and three of the top four. "Jewel in the Palace" led the way with an average 41.6 share and a 56.0 rating. It was followed by SBS' "Lovers in Paris" (41.5 share/58.4 rating), and MBC's "Jumong" (40.6/56.1) and "My Name Is Kim Sam-sun" (37.7/53.9).

"Winter Sonata," the signature program of the so-called Korean Wave that generated a huge market for Korean programming around Asia, did not make the list. "Jewel in the Palace," however, has been just as popular internationally.

All told, KBS accounted for eight hits, MBC seven and SBS five.

Shows making the list were spread out fairly evenly over the years, with each year scoring between two and four top hits.
