Meet an Emmy Nominee: 'House of Cards' Star Michael Kelly

"I was surprised again this year," Kelly says of his third nomination for outstanding support actor in a drama series.

One would think that Michael Kelly would be used to getting recognized for his role as Doug Stamper, the chief of staff to Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood on Netflix's House of Cards, but it remains a thrilling experience for the actor.

"We're living in an age where television is getting so incredible," Kelly explained when he stopped by The Hollywood Reporter's offices to discuss his third Emmy nomination. "Some of the best entertainment in the world is on television right now and to think you're one of the six, seven casts that gets nominated — it never gets old."

Alongside Kelly, the Netflix drama received seven nominations this year, including for outstanding drama series and recognition for his co-stars, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. "We always text each other congratulations," he says.

When asked about filming the show's season-five election in tandem with the 2016 presidential election, Kelly says, "It's always been crazy to be on a political show. But to actually film the election during what became the craziest election of our lifetime — it was wild."
