Meryl Streep to Star as Rock 'n' Roll Mom in 'Ricki and the Flash'
UPDATED: Jonathan Demme will direct the comedic drama, which TriStar is in final negotiations to pick up.
TriStar is in final negotiations to acquire Ricki and the Flash, a Diablo Cody spec script that has Meryl Streep attached to star and Jonathan Demme on board to direct.
The package has been in the works since last year with Demme being the most recent addition. The project hit town last week and generated strong interest from Universal and Fox 2000.
The script is described as a funny and touching story of a rock 'n' roll-loving woman who chased her tattered dream at the price of her family, but gets a last chance to, perhaps, make things right.
Ricki will see Streep portray a guitar-wielding, hard rockin’ mama by night and grocery store checkout lady by day.
TriStar has given the project a production commitment and plans to shoot this fall. That gives Streep the summer to bone up on her guitar-thrashing skills.
Marc Platt, the movie producer who also is behind the Broadway hit Wicked, and Mason Novick, who produced Cody’s Juno and Young Adult, are producing.
Demme, who's directed movies such as Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, is also known among elder rock fans for his music videos for Bruce Springsteen, The Pretenders and Neil Young. He even directed the Young documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold.
