Dark Lips Rule at the Met Gala
Taylor Swift, Rachel McAdams, Brie Larson and more opted for a deeper shade.
The theme of Monday’s Met Gala in New York was "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," but there seemed to be a bit of a goth influence at work. No fewer than half a dozen starlets opted for such deep lip shades they were almost black.
Poppy Delevingne was the first on the carpet with the dramatic look, which contrasted with her long, platinum locks. Taylor Swift, too, played off the lightness of her newly bleached ‘do and wore a particularly dark lipstick (and almost-bare eyes) with her sparkling Louis Vuitton dress. Is this further evidence of her edging up her look?
Rachel McAdams wore a stunning shade of deep bordeaux, which had the perfect amount of warmth for her golden gown. Another blonde, Brie Larson, also opted for the color of the evening. The actress’s bold lip was paired with a platinum paillette-covered dress, sleek hair and voluminous lashes.
As for the brunettes, Rose Byrne’s pout was a bit lighter than the rest, to go with her shimmery ruffled gown. And Hailee Seinfeld went a bit ombre with hers, getting darker at the edges. She was the only one of the group who went for an eye as well, wearing a warm, smoked-out look that complemented her hazel eyes and green dress.
"I love a deep burgundy lip," says makeup artist Coleen Olwell, who did Kate Mara's makeup for the evening. "I saw it on the runways for fall 2016, and I think we'll see more of that. It's very beautiful and striking, and it's wearable because people can swipe on mascara, keep the eye simple and do a lip."
