The swimmer's stone-faced stare as Chad le Clos danced in front of him has gone viral.

Michael Phelps had a serious game face on before his 200-meter butterfly semifinal on Monday, and the moment was captured on camera and quickly went viral.

As the swimmers got ready ahead of the event, South Africa's Chad le Clos danced and shadowboxed in front of Phelps, who had his hood up and headphones on. Phelps, who lost to le Clos four years ago at the Olympics, stared stonily ahead of him, looking serious and a bit angry.

#PhelpsFace soon became an internet meme, trending on both Twitter and Facebook even into Tuesday morning, as social media users joked that Phelps had crossed over to the "dark side."

Phelps came in second place in the race, one second ahead of le Clos. After the race he was asked what he was thinking as le Clos shadow-boxed in front of him. "Nothing," replied Phelps. "I was trying not to even really look at him."
