Michael Strahan, Kelly Ripa Win Daytime Emmy on Heels of Controversy
The duo won best entertainment talk show host during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Michael Strahan and Kelly Ripa won a Daytime Emmy Award on Sunday on the heels of controversy over the former's impending departure from the show.
The Live! duo won best entertainment talk show host during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Their win comes on the heels of Strahan’s announcement he will be departing the show on May 13. He originally had planned to exit over the summer for a full-time gig at ABC's Good Morning America, starting in September.
Ripa staged a one-woman boycott after learning April 19 of Strahan's departure less than an hour before the news was announced to the media.
On Tuesday, Ripa walked onstage holding hands with Strahan and declared, "Our long national nightmare is over." She also joked that on hand were “trained professional snipers with tranquilizer darts in case I drift too far off-message.”
Ripa also delivered a critique of the way corporate executives kept her out of the loop during the Strahan-GMA negotiation. “What transpired over the course of a few days has been extraordinary in the sense that it started a much greater conversation about communication and consideration and, most importantly, respect in the workplace," she said.
On Monday's Live!, Ripa and Strahan each carried an Emmy as they walked out.
As they placed their trophies on the Live! table, Ripa joked, "What did you all do last night?" As they expressed their gratitude at receiving the awards, clinking the trophies together in a mock toast, Ripa indicated they weren't present for the ceremony because it was in L.A.
"They used to have the Emmys in New York City every year, so we used to be able to attend," she said.
Ripa also joked that perhaps not attending the show was good luck, recalling the many times she attended the show and lost the awards for which she was nominated.
Both she and Strahan also said they didn't know they'd won their Daytime Emmy for best entertainment talk show host until people started sending them congratulatory messages.
"I didn't realize we had even won an Emmy until I started getting text messages from all of my friends," Ripa said.
They both thanked the show's staff.
"It's about a team and that's what we have here," Strahan said.
Ripa, meanwhile singled out those who are responsible for Live!'s Halloween spectacular ever year and joked that that show's already in the works.
It remains to be seen, however, who will dress up alongside Ripa for Live!'s 2016 Halloween bash, since Strahan will have already moved on to GMA by then.
