Berlin: First Generations Titles Announced
Michael Winterbottom's music documentary 'On the Road' and Lena Dunham-starrer 'My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea' will screen at Berlin's sidebar for kids and youth films.
Michael Winterbottom's music documentary On the Road, a tour film about London band Wolf Alice, and Dash Shaw's animated film My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, which features the voice of Lena Dunham, are among the titles that will screen in the Generations section of the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival.
Organizers on Thursday unveiled the first 15 titles in next year's Generation lineup, which features films for children or a youth audience.
Films that will have their world premiere in the Generations lineup include Carol Salter's Almost Heaven, a documentary set at one of China's largest funeral homes; Rafael Kapelinski's black-and-white debut drama, Butterfly Kisses; Brazilian feature Two Irenes from director Fabio Meira; Maria Novaro's Tesoros, a buried-treasure adventure film set in modern-day Mexico; and Stonehead, the story of a migrant laborer growing up with his grandmother that marks the feature debut of Chinese director Xiang Zhao.
The Generations lineup also includes two new Canadian films: Weirdos, a fictional road trip from veteran director Bruce McDonald set in Eastern Canada in 1976; and Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves, a drama co-directed by Mathieu Denis and Simon Lavoie.
Neil Triffett's Emo the Musical, a feature-length version of the short he presented in the Generation lineup in 2014, will have its international premiere in Berlin, as will Cristiane Oliveira's family drama A Woman and the Father.
Other Generation titles announced include Kuba Czekaj's Polish drama The Erlprince; Dario Mascambroni's Argentine feature January; Kriv Stenders' Red Dog: True Blue; and two German films: Rabbit School — Guardians of the Golden Egg, from director Ute von Munchow-Pohl, and Richard the Stork, co-directed by Toby Genkel and Reza Memari.
The full Generations lineup will be announced in January.
