Is her Oscar de la Renta dress a tribute to Prince?

The day after Prince’s untimely death  —and Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday  —the President and First Lady met Her Royal Highness for lunch at Windsor Castle. For the occasion, Michelle Obama donned not only a purple coat but a purple dress too, which begs the question, did she do it for Prince?

Among other tributes, Snapchat created a Purple Rain filter and San Francisco City Hall was bathed in purple light Thursday night. It only makes sense that the style savvy FLOTUS would select her deep purple Narcisco Rodriguez coat and bright violet Oscar de la Renta dress in the legendary performer’s signature shade to honor him.

Her husband is one of countless prominent fans, stating via Facebook on Thursday that, "Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince… ‘A strong spirit transcends rules,’ Prince once said. And nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder or more creative." Perhaps we’ll see the President in a purple tie next.
