Microsoft cuts HD DVD price

Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday at Comic-Con that it will lower the price of its Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player to $179 from $199 and sweeten the deal by throwing in five free HD DVD movies for those buying the unit between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30.

The format war between rival next-generation disc formats continues to drive down prices in both camps. HD DVD also received a boost with announcements that format backers Warner Home Video and Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release hot properties "300" and Season 1 of the TV series "Heroes" on HD DVD.
