Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir and Tiffany Boone also star in the film, set to begin streaming Dec. 23 on Netflix.

George Clooney is on a mission in the latest trailer for Netflix’s The Midnight Sky.

Clooney directs, produces and stars in the film as Augustine, a lone scientist in the Arctic amidst the aftermath of a global catastrophe.

In the opening seconds of the trailer, a young girl approaches a computer screen displaying what Augustine describes as the Aether — “a spaceship coming back from a planet that [they] hoped would be [their] future.”

Aboard the Aether, a crew of astronauts (Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir and Tiffany Boone) travel through space back to planet Earth, which — unbeknownst to them — has suffered an apocalyptic fate.

Jones stars as Sully, one of the astronauts who first appears standing against a backdrop of celestial colors and planets in the sky.

The trailer shows life on the Aether, the inhabitants of which have lost all contact with NASA and mission control.

“I have to contact them before it’s too late,” Augustine tells the young girl. “I have to warn them about the conditions on Earth.”

Set to music composed by Alexandre Desplat, the rest of the trailer features flashes of action-packed scenes — meteorites crashing into the Aether, a wind storm on Earth, sweeping shots of celestial skylines and, finally, Augustine making contact.

As the trailer closes, Augustine's voice crackles through a radio: “Is anyone out there?”

Based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s acclaimed novel Good Morning, Midnight, The Midnight Sky screenplay is penned by Mark L. Smith.

The film will be released in select theaters on Dec. 11 and will be available for streaming on Dec. 23 on Netflix.
