Miller receives French Order award

'Mad Max' creator follows Redford, Streep, Spielberg

SYDNEY -- Dr. George Miller, the Australian creator of “Mad Max” and “Happy Feet” received the highest cultural honor handed out by the French government, the Order of Arts and Letters (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) at the opening of the annual French Film Festival Australia on Tuesday.

Presented the ward by Michel Filhol, the French ambassador to Australia, Miller was selected for the honor by Frédéric Mitterand, the French minister of Culture and Communication, “in recognition of his impressive body of work spanning three decades."

Other film industry luminaries who have received the award, normally given to a French citizen, since its inception 50 years ago have included Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg.
