Minka Kelly's 5 Hottest Roles (Video)
The "Charlie's Angels" star's split with Derek Jeter has sparked renewed interest in her career.
Actress Minka Kelly is a free agent again, so to speak, having recently split with New York Yankees slugger Derek Jeter. The break-up comes as the 31-year-old actress is about to kick off a lead role in ABC's Charlie's Angels reboot, and is in demand both professionally and personally.
Kelly is the daughter of former Aerosmith guitarist Rick Dufray and exotic dancer Maureen Kelly. She spent a year studying to become a surgeon's assistant before landing her breakthrough role as of cheerleader Lyla on Friday Night Lights. She's one of the 51 people that Charlie Sheen follows on his enormously popular Twitter feed (she was among the first 28 people the actor followed), was named Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive in 2010, and gave a heartbroken Joseph Gordon-Levitt hope again as April at the end of (500) Days of Summer.
Here are some of the key roles that upped Kelly's "sexy" factor.
1. Eve French on Charlie's Angels
Kelly plays Eve French on ABC's reboot of the '70s television series. “It’s exciting for me because I actually have a little tough girl inside of me, so I’d like to explore that and to do all these fun stunts and learn all these skills,” she told The Hollywood Reporter at Comic-Con last month. Count scuba diving, horseback riding and drifting cars among the skills she's picking up for the show, which premieres Sept. 22.
2. Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights
Kelly broke through with her role on the NBC/DirecTV football drama Friday Night Lights, playing the former girlfriend of Jason Street (Scott Porter) and Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch). She exited the show at the end of its third season. In the fourth season, Kelly returned for an episode -- reuniting briefly with Riggins -- but Riggins realized her dreams would never be reached if she stayed in Dillon to be with him.
3. Gaby on Parenthood
Kelly joined Friday Night Lights' creator Jason Katims' other drama in a recurring capacity in its second season, playing Max's behavioral aide. But her character adds drama to the large Braverman clan when she sleeps with Crosby (Dax Shepard) and in the aftermath, quits her job as Max's aide. She wasn't the only one who appeared on both Friday Night Lights and Parenthood; Michael B. Jordan landed a meaty role as Alex, Haddie's boyfriend.
4. Sara Matthews in The Roommate
A deranged college freshman played by Leighton Meester moves in with Kelly's character and quickly becomes obsessed with her. In true Single White Female form, The Roommate has same-sex overtones only without any of the scares. The film came and went earlier this year, but THR reviewer Frank Scheck at least gave Kelly credit for "projecting adorableness at every turn."
5. Herself, as Esquire magazine's Sexiest Woman Alive 2010
The video pretty much says it all.
