MIPCOM: Discovery's David Zaslav to Get Honor
The CEO will give a keynote ahead of the Oct. 18 gala dinner in Cannes.
Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav will be 2017’s MIPCOM personality of the year.
He will be honored at a gala dinner on Oct. 18 during the international TV confab in Cannes and will give a keynote speech earlier in the day.
Zaslav is credited with growing the company, taking it public in 2008 and overseeing the acquisition of the Scripps Networks in a $14.6 billion deal in July. The company’s portfolio now includes Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, TLC, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, HGTV, Travel Channel and Food Network, delivering 20 percent of the female primetime audience on average.
He also led the acquisition of Eurosport for $534 million in 2015 and expanded the company’s footprint throughout Latin America and launched several digital arms including Group Nine Media, home to shortform content brands NowThis, the news video outlet, and animal-focused The Dodo.
“I am fortunate to lead a company at the center of our industry’s transformation as we push to innovate our world-class content and brands and nourish superfan audiences across every screen and service around the globe,” Zaslav said in a statement.
“David Zaslav is the visionary leader of one of our industry’s most dynamic and innovative companies. He continues to redefine great content and how viewers consume it in a fast-evolving marketplace,” said conference organizer Reed Midem CEO Paul Zilk.
Prior to Discovery, Zaslav oversaw the launches of CNBC and MSNBC while at NBCUniversal.
This year’s MIPCOM is set to be held Oct. 16-19 in Cannes.
