Lars Lundstrom, creator of the original drama on which AMC's new sci-fi series 'Humans' is based, will executive produce the modern-day thriller.

Gaumont Television Europe has greenlit its second English-language series, teaming with Real Humans creator Lars Lundstrom for the one-hour thriller series 1001. Gaumont will co-produce the series together with Swedish-based Matador Film and Eyeworks Scandi Fiction.

Lundstrom's Scandinavian series Real Humans, about life-like robotic servants, is being adapted for the U.S. by AMC, Channel 4, Matador and Kudos Film and Television as Humans.

1001 focuses on a blackmailer who threatens to carry out a murder spree if he isn't paid off, to the tune of 1,001 million dollars. The project will be the second series from Gaumont Television Europe, after Spy City, an espionage drama created by British novelist and screenwriter William Boyd (A Good Man in Africa) and produced together with German group Odeon. Gaumont's U.S.-based production company has several series in production, including NBC's Hannibal and Hemlock Grove and drug drama Narcos for Netflix.

1001 is planned as a 12-part one-hour drama and will be shot in English.

“We are starting to see a huge trend into drama production, making Europe a new frontier for television,” said Christophe Riandee, vice CEO of Gaumont.
