MIPTV planning tribute to Japan

PARIS -- Japan will be the country of honor this April in Cannes as MIPTV celebrates that nation's media and entertainment industry, organizers said Thursday.

The tribute kicks off April 7 with a special "Japan Day" opening cocktail party and will continue all week long with conferences focusing on Japanese animation and format export markets, speakers specializing in the digital media industry and a focus on anime and programs from the region.

"Japan has always played an important role at our markets and more importantly is a key player in the global entertainment industry particularly in digital delivery," director of MIPTV's television division Paul Johnson said in a statement.

With nearly 60% of animation produced in the world coming from Japan, the country is set to become the second-largest market for mobile television services in 2012, just behind the U.S.
