MIPTV: ZDF, Nutopia Partner on Docu-Drama 'Europe –- The Story of Us'

The sweeping historic series is modeled on Nutopia's "America –- The Story of Us" and "Mankind –- The Story of All of Us."

U.K./U.S. production house Nutopia is partnering with Germany's ZDF Enterprises to produce a multi-episode docu-drama Europe -- The Story of Us, which will attempt to capture the history of the continent in a series featuring dramatic reenactments, CGI-heavy special effects and interviews with celebrities and news makers. ZDF will handling international sales for the project and will shop it to buyers at next month's MIP TV television conference in Cannes. Nutopia and ZDF are also looking for co-production partners to come on board the series.

“It is incredibly exciting to be working with ZDF Enterprises and telling the story of not just a single country but a whole continent, a place that changed the whole world,” said Jane Root, Nutopia’s founder and CEO.

Nutopia set the blueprint for this form of edu-tainment with its two 12-part series for the History Channel, America -- The Story of Us (2010) and Mankind -- the Story of All of Us.

The former featured commentary from actors including Liev Schreiber and Michael Douglas, news anchors such as Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams, and news makers including Colin Powell and Rudolph Giuliani. Actor Josh Brolin and TV doctor Mehmet Oz were among the contributors to Mankind -- the Story of All of Us, which was a huge international seller seen in more than 150 territories worldwide.
